Overview
Introduction
The master of Medicine degree course in Psychiatry is intended to train medically qualified doctors to master the practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness as well as giving them a sound scientific foundation to enable them to teach students (undergraduate and postgraduate), and carry out original research. The emphasis in this course is on clinical and practical work and most of the teaching will be by “bedside” teaching in the wards during ward rounds and clinical case conference. The candidate who shall be a full time employee of the hospital will be assigned clinical responsibility over a wide variety of
patients and shall spend most of his/her working hours including night and weekend calls admitting, clerking, examining and treating patients under supervision by his/her teachers.
The lectures will mainly be introductory occupying not more than two hours of each working day. The course will be continuous from first to the third year. During this period the candidate will select a dissertation topic as he acquires knowledge and experience and will complete the dissertation during the final year.
The programme philosophy is anchored on the University’s philosophy that is guided by the need to connect and inspire individuals, to provide leadership and stewardship and to give hope and faith to the East African society that it can excel in whatever it chooses to do with passion, moral responsibility and a strong sense of patriotism.
Rationale of the programme
The Master of Medicine in Psychiatry programme was developed in 1982 in Kenya to cater for the needs of the growing population in the region. The revision of this programme recognizes the fact that the current psychiatrist should not only be able to serve patients but also have managerial, teaching and research skills. Writing and presentation techniques are expected to be taught in the proposed syllabus. In addition, the psychiatrist should be able to collaborate with other professionals in the care of patients and the prevention of mental illness.
The goal of this programme is to provide medical doctors with the opportunity to develop skills in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. The trainee shall be equipped to conduct mental health research and train other health care workers on the management of mental disorders
