Prof David Ndetei has been appointed to the position of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Zone 14 (East, Central and South Africa) Representative, a position which he will hold for a period of three (3) years. Prof Ndetei was competitively elected during the WPA General Assembly held in Madrid, Spain  between September 14th and 18th, 2014.

This means that he now sits on the WPA Board that develops and formulates WPA Policy. Besides this, Prof. Ndetei is the Secretary of the WPA Section on Psychiatry in Developing Countries and Committee Member of the WPA section on Rural Psychiatry as well as representing Africa at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

"The honor and recognition go to the University of Nairobi which has made it possible for me to be its 'ambassador' to the Global Community on matters of Academic Psychiatry," says Ndetei.

He adds, "on a different note, what surprised me the most is that the Americans are copying some of the models we have developed in Developing Countries for Community Mental Health."

The Department of Psychiatry through the Chair, Dr. Wangari Kuria, wishes Prof Ndetei well on the new position and wishes him success as he undertakes the greater responsibilities at the helm of the Psychiatric Body.
