The Department of Psychiatry held a CPT Training  on 3rd June, 2014 at the KNH Mental Health Department (Patient Support Center), from 8am to 4pm. The Training was a great success, attracting up to 60 participants from various departments and institutions. The theme was Cognitive Processing Therapy, presented mainly by Dr. Debra Kaysen, Ph.D.

Dr. Kaysen is a clinical psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Depression Therapy Research Endowed Professor at the University of Washington. Her research is situated at the interface of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related comorbidities (pain, depression, substance use disorders), and includes both etiologic and prevention/treatment-oriented studies.

Dr. Kaysen conducts research across a variety of trauma exposed populations including active duty military, veterans, lesbian and bisexual women, torture survivors, and sexual assault survivors. She has been involved with several international research projects adapting treatments for PTSD for low and medium resource settings such as for torture survivors in Iraq, and for rape victims in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She also trains therapists across the U.S. and internationally in empirically supported treatments for PTSD.

other presenters were Prof Deepa Rao, PhD, University of Washington, Depaprtment of Global Health. Prof. Rao is an assistant professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. The Faculty of Psychiatry was ably represented by Dr. Muthoni Mathai and Dr. manasi Kumar.

Those invited to attend the training included:

  • Msc. Clinical Psychologists students
  • Masters of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed. Psych) students
  • Interested faculty from department of psychiatry, and
  • Counselors from KNH.

The participants were privileged to tap into the great wealth of clinical experience and research expertise in the broader subject of CPT.
